“SCHOOL BE SCAM”: True or False??…

By Nelson
Have you heard the phrase “school be scam” gaining popularity among Ghanaian youth? Well, it’s partly true and partly false. Let’s break it down and find ways to blend classroom learning with practical skills for our own growth and our society’s betterment.
Yes, there are some valid concerns about school system being a scam. It’s undeniable that the traditional education system can sometimes fall short in preparing students for real-world challenges.
If schools solely focus on rote memorization, disregarding creativity and problem-solving skills, it can indeed feel like a scam. A curriculum built on early career development and hands-on learning experiences is crucial to empower students to tackle societal issues effectively and help build the country..
You might have heard that going to school won’t make you rich. And our current economic and unemployment status affirms that, giving the youth if not all but majority the perception of formal education being a total fraud..
While that’s true in some cases, it’s not the whole story. School gives us a chance to learn and grow. It lays the foundation for our future careers and passions. It’s up to us to make the most of it
Thus it is essential to recognize that not all schools follow this flawed approach. Many educational institutions are adapting and embracing innovative teaching methods that foster critical thinking, collaboration, and entrepreneurship. These schools provide an environment where students can thrive, develop their talents, and become agents of positive change in society.
To make school more practical and useful, incorporating the “street sense” we can:
1. Learn by Doing: Schools can include internships, where we work in real jobs for a while right from the junior high or basic level. This will help students apply what they learnt and become better problem solvers.
2. Be Entrepreneurs: Schools can encourage us to think like entrepreneurs, to come up with new ideas and start our own businesses. This way, we can learn to be creative and make things happen.
3. Work with Industries: Schools can team up with companies so we can learn from people with real-world experience. They can teach us what’s happening in the world and help us prepare for our futures. This can also be achieved through strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) model of education throughout the country.
4. Keep Learning: Learning doesn’t stop when we leave the classroom. We can keep learning on our own, taking online courses or going to workshops. This helps us stay up-to-date and keep growing.
So, let’s remember that school isn’t perfect, but it’s not a scam either. By combining what we learn in class with practical skills, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and our society. Together, we can make education a path to success that opens doors for us and helps us make a difference.
